The Transformation of Park Holm

Newport, RI, November 19, 2010- A ceremony was held at Park Holm to celebrate the completion of Phase One of the project and to receive a $15,000 grant from National Grid. Those in attendance included Head of the Housing Authority James Reed, HUD Regional Administrator Richard A. Walega, Mayor Jeanne-Marie Napolitano, along with residents, construction workers, city officials, and other housing authority members.

The Park Holm Development is a labor of love for the Housing Authority of the City of Newport, its residents, and the Board of Commissioners. The group hired Davis Square Architects in 2008 as a master planning consultant. The result was a $40 million master plan that envisions the revitalization of this 262-unit neighborhood with various combinations of rehab and new construction.

Phase One of the project included the renovation of 51 units, preserving the existing housing, but stripping them to the studs and rebuilding them to LEED standards. These sustainability efforts allowed the development to receive the $15,000 grant from National Grid to promote energy-saving initiatives and education programs for the residents.
