Trolley Square Ribbon Cutting

North Cambridge, MA, November 20th, 2006- Davis Square Architects, Inc. and Homeowner’s Rehab. Inc. (HRI) – a local non-profit housing developer, along with numerous state & local representatives, funders, and distinguished guests, celebrated the dedication of the Trolley Square Development.

The fruition of this development can be partially attributed to a partnership with the City of Cambridge. They provided the significant funds necessary in order to develop affordable housing in an area where land prices and uses dictate high quality, cost and level of amenities (like underground parking).

Trolley Square is a prime example of Smart Growth. The project is next-door to an MBTA bus terminus, a four-minute walk from the MBTA Red Line, and adjacent to the Linear Park Bike Path. Sustainability and energy efficiency were the foundations of this project. In addition, Trolley Square is also a green/ sustainable project, LEED qualified- albeit not registered, in order to save affordable housing funds. It incorporates many green features such as dual-flush toilets, reusing captured storm water for landscape irrigation, and photovoltaic panels.

Overall, the Trolley Square development exemplifies Davis Square Architects’ long-standing commitment to environmentally responsible design that enhances its surroundings. The project does a lot for the neighborhood and pushes the limits of what can be done in terms of affordable housing. Currently affordable housing is a critical need and also a hot topic. Thus, this project sets a very high standard for any future projects.
