Scope
Renovation
19 single-room occupancy units

As a part of Pine Street Inn’s goal to provide more permanent housing and decrease the number of residents in their emergency shelters, the Inn purchased valuable brownstones on Upton Street in Boston’s South End. Teaming up with Pine Street Inn and the Planning Office for Urban Affairs, Davis Square Architects combined and renovated the two historic structures into a single facility that includes 19 single-room occupancy units, offices, common spaces, and an outdoor patio.

The design team worked closely with the South End Landmarks and Massachusetts Historic Commissions to preserve the historic character of the buildings, while also meeting current building codes and including new systems. The renovated units all have kitchenettes and baths, and feature beautiful historic elements such as large windows, crown molding, trim, and marble mantles. The building also accommodates an onsite manager.

Despite the fact that the project – which provides housing for formerly homeless individuals – had to overcome a number of hurdles in its development, it has received much support and praise from the Mayor and serves as a model for other similar projects around the City.
