HUD’s “Best Practices” award

This dramatic renovation project turned 44 scattered-site, mostly vacant buildings in Boston into affordable housing. To do so required the coordination of many ownership perspectives, including five area community development corporations, the Boston Housing Authority, and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation. A landmark development, this project eliminates the need for dozens of funding sources usually prevalent in affordable housing, and therefore allows these sites to be rejuvenated quickly and efficiently.

Davis Square Architects’ design features the addition of wrap-around porches, which bring a comfortable scale to the two-family buildings and streetscape. The sites, utilities, and interior finishes were modernized, preserving the units for a long life as energy-efficient, attractive affordable housing.

Exemplifying the spirit of cooperation among developers, this project earned HUD’s prestigious “Best Practices” award.
