Boston’s South End is the largest remaining urban Victorian residential neighborhood in the United States. In a growing effort to revitalize the area, Madison Park Development and Haley House called on Davis Square Architects to ensure adherence to strict historic preservation guidelines. By working closely with developers, Interfaith tenants, and the surrounding neighborhood associations, a program was developed that combined careful historic restoration with modern upgrades, resulting in 69 units of much-needed affordable housing. Masonry exteriors were cleaned and restored, and aluminum doors were exchanged for historically appropriate mahogany. Unit interiors were gutted and rehabilitated to better accommodate tenants, and code-mandated upgrades, such as life safety systems, were sensitively integrated with the historic features of the buildings.
