Davis Square Architects teamed up with the Greater Lawrence Action Community Council (GLCAC) to revitalize a long-neglected block on Essex Street, in the heart of downtown Lawrence. The mixed-use project includes approximately 7,700 square feet of commercial space and 39 rental apartments. The development also includes the extensive restoration and adaptive reuse of 370 Essex Street, once the original headquarters of the Lawrence Gas Company, into 16 rental apartments and ground-floor commercial space. A new five-story addition provides a continuous streetscape that complements the existing fabric of Essex Street. Apartments are a mix of one- to three-bedroom units, all of which will be affordable to working families. Eight apartments were set aside for families holding Section 8 vouchers.
Creating affordable housing while attracting local businesses engaged in needed services supporting the community, this new development will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
