In 2013, an extensive rehabilitation was needed for the HSEA buildings as they were approaching the 150-year mark. This involved bringing the 32 buildings up to modern standards while retaining their original historic character and integrity, as well as ensuring affordability for the 146 families that are long-term residents.

The occupied rehabilitation included new kitchens, bathrooms and finishes for all units and common areas, extensive masonry restoration; updated HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems, new roofing, and the replacement of over 850 windows with new historic wood sashes. The scope also entailed handicap accessibility and code requirements. Working closely in tandem with residents and neighbors, we were able to successfully phase construction on all 32 buildings.
