Located just outside of Harvard Square in Cambridge, Putnam Square Apartments offers 94 units of affordable senior housing. Originally built in 1974, important building upgrades were required in order to preserve affordability for the long term.
In addition to masonry and envelope repairs, the occupied rehabilitation included new elevators, windows, bathrooms and kitchens, as well as common area improvements to the lobbies and community room. The 11th floor also features a beautifully landscaped terrace, and the ground-floor lobby is home to the Peace Garden. The design team made sure to take into account several components of the renovation had to be specifically tailored to senior needs, such as installing double-continuous corridor handrails and grab bars, slip-resistant flooring, and a computer lab with enlarged monitors and keyboards. Handicap accessibility was also a focalpoint of the work completed.
